That Kind of Family

 


I spent the weekend with an amazing group of women at the women's retreat at Rockhaven Bible Camp.  I shared about letting our words that we speak be pleasing to God. You can't have freedom if you speak chains over your life! It was a fun time. I made sure to clean my whole house so that when I made it home, it would be clean. The men in my home also went to a men's weekend. When I got home, guy stuff was everywhere! Of course, God was giving me the perfect opportunity to practice what I preach. I smiled, greeted my granddogs, and straightened up my house. My husband rewarded this by saying, "Do you feel like cooking?" My response was a resounding no. He agreed and off the whole family was to a restaurant for dinner. Keep in mind that I have four adult children. When they were young children, we were on a tight budget. We would have a conversation about what they could order before we entered the restaurant. Ordering water was a given. As my family entered the restaurant we gave our drink order. Everyone ordered a soda except my daughter, who has moved back home after graduating from college. She ordered water. After the waitress left to get our drinks, my daughter said the funniest thing. "Since when did we become a soda family?" It was a funny way of saying, "You're willing to pay for more than just water?" Here's where the spiritual part kicks in. Without Jesus, we are living an empty  life. We have a void in our hearts that can only be filled by Jesus because that's how God created us.  Joy, peace, and hope comes when you recognize that there is something more than just this world. There's something better. By recognizing we can never be good enough and we need Jesus' goodness to cover our brokenness, Jesus becomes a part of our lives. He talks to us  and directs us,  through the Bible. His death on the cross replaces the death we deserve for our actions. My children did nothing to pay for sodas. Even though they deserved water, they received sodas because we paid the price. Jesus paid the price for your peace, joy, and redemption. You can't earn it, but you can receive it by simply asking Jesus to be a life-changing part of your life. You may not be a "soda family," but you can be a part of God's family!

  On the 26th of June, my daughter celebrated 7 years past brain surgery when she had her left hippocampus and amygdala removed. Due to chronic and frequent seizures, we faced a decision no parents want to make. Seven Years After Brain Surgery- God Has a Plan

  Today, my daughter and I headed towards Little Rock for her neurologist appointment tomorrow. For the first time since she was in second grade, they are taking her off all seizure medication. This is quite the miracle. At sixteen years old, we were unsure what would happen after brain surgery. When the doctor mentioned she would need a section of her brain removed, the temptation to rant to God was great. My husband and I had dedicated our adult lives to ministry. My daughter loved the Lord. Why would He allow this to happen to her? If we lived only for this earth, there would be good reason to be angry; however, this world is not what we live for. God never promised perfection or comfort on earth. He promised that to be with us when it is hard and to never leave us or forsake us. Leaving a Lasting Impact

  This was a hard weekend. A dear lady who has attended our church for the seventeen years we have pastored died. We held her funeral on Saturday. When we moved to our church, our children were all very little. Both sets of grandparents lived hours away, and I felt very much on my own. This woman recognized the struggles and stepped in as designated grandma. She picked my girls up from school, baked cookies with them, and took them along on many of her family birthday parties. She became what they desperately needed. So much so, they made sure she was on the family row at high school graduation. She didn't do this with just my children. She saw every child that walked through the church door as a child worthy of love and her devotion. When faced with difficulty, she always had kind words to say, no matter how she was treated.
